

Lawrence Zarrow, “Larry” AKA Poppop, 99, died peacefully at home on Sunday, April 3rd, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Lawrence, son of Hyman and Bette Zarrow of New York, NY, was an early pioneer of electronics, building the first portable radio at the age of 18. During WWII, he worked on early sonar and radar technologies. His engineering firm, Probescobe, designed instruments for the U.S. Dept. of Defense, NASA, Bell Systems, and the Coast Guard to name a few. He most notably invented an amplifier for the Apollo Lunar Module, which controlled the steering rockets that helped astronauts navigate on and off the moon, as well as instruments to find lost atomic bombs. He was a philanthropist, avid reader, sailer, and serial storyteller and jokester. He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Alan) Tanguay; granddaughters, Rebecca and Courtney; great grandchildren, Sophia and Gabriel; Nephew, Peter (Andrea) Horowitz; sister-in-law, Marilynn Klein; and lifelong friends and caregivers, Kathy, Rosa, and Monica. Lawrence is predeceased by his loving wife of 71 years, Gabrielle (Gloria) Zarrow and beloved brother, Herbert Zarrow.
