Lillian passed away on April 21, 2018 at the age of 92 at home. She was born in Portland, Maine. She was an advocate for children throughout her career. She earned her BS from City College of New York in 1949, her Masters of Arts from Columbia University in 1952 and her Doctorate in Education from the University of Sarasota, Florida, in 1985. She received her Certificate for teaching kindergarten from the State of Maryland when she first married Toby Oxtoby in 1953, when they lived in Alexandria, VA, then worked as a Child Welfare Specialist for the California Department of Social Welfare when they moved to Santa Monica from late 1953 to early 1956, returning then to New York City. She became the director of the East Tremont Child Care Center in 1961, working there until 1970, at a time when preschools for working parents were not common. She was a member of the Day Care Directors Associate (President 1967-1969), National Association of Social Workers and other professional organizations. She was the Chairman of the Early Childhood Education Program at New York City Technical College in Brooklyn from 1970 to 1977, was at the Voorhees Campus in Manhattan from 1977 to 1981, and then taught Early Childhood Education at Borough of Manhattan Community College from 1981 until 2002, where she was the coordinator of the Early Childhood Department. She was also an adjunct Lecturer at Lehman College from 1968 – 1973 and at Fordham University at Lincoln Center in 1973-1974 and 1986. She was listed in Who’s Who of American Women in 1974-75, 1979-80 and 1983-83. She was an avid fan of opera and film, a voracious book reader, and spent many summers in Provincetown on Cape Cod. She is survived by her son Kenneth Boynton Oxtoby and his wife Jane Corbin, her granddaughter Racine and grandsons Will and Eric, her stepson John, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, several great-great nieces and nephews, and her many coworkers and friends. She was predeceased by her husband Toby Ewing Oxtoby, her parents Benjamin and Bella (Kaufman) Rosen and her sisters Alice Levithan and Irene Rosen.
