
BEAL--Louis Morris Starr. (1926-2016) Passed away peacefully at his home in New York City on September 18, 2016, a WWII Marine veteran (4th Division), student of Walter Gropius, employee of Florence Knoll, inductee into the Interior Design Hall of Fame, life trustee of Rhode Island School of Design, vestryman of St. Thomas Church. Born and raised in Boston, the son of William Deford Beal and Beatrice Starr, he attended Brooks School, Harvard and graduated Rhode Island School of Design in 1952. A pioneer of interior architecture, Louis built a 50-year career designing interiors for many of the leading law firms, banks, corporations and public buildings of the day, including Goldman Sachs, First Boston, Time Inc, Boston City Hall, Ropes & Gray, Howard Hughes Medical Institute and many more. In 1961, he co-founded Interior Space Design (ISD) in New York City. "Professionalism is what I'm interested in. Hopefully, I have been able to bring some class and grace to the profession," Louis said upon his induction into the Interior Design Hall of Fame. A devoted Episcopalian, Louis was also a Commander in The Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Always a gentleman, he loved his summers on Lake George, NY and mourned the loss of his husband, Ulrich G. Freyschmidt, in 2015. Louis was pre-deceased by his brothers, William Deford Beal, Jr. and Danforth Beal. A Requiem Mass will be held for Louis on Saturday, October 8 at 12 Noon at St. Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, New York City.
