Our 101-year-old superhuman mom, Lucille Elizabeth Tyroler Freedberg, passed away on Thursday, May 7, at 7:30 am, at home in St. Petersburg, FL. Her daughters, Robin and Sydney, were with her when she went.
We got our sweetness from our dad and our toughness from mom, a retired lawyer, professor and judge. She was feisty almost until the end, hollering ‘let me get up please’ even though she was too weak to stand.
Born with a cop’s mind, Lucille Elizabeth Tyroler had an insatiable curiosity, exceptional observation skills and feisty stubbornness.
Daughter of Harry and Mary Tyroler , she grew up in Brooklyn doting over her baby brother Jesse. She enjoyed playing the Baldwin baby grand piano her father sacrificed to give her.
Lucille was the first in her family to go to college, graduating from Hunter College in 1944 when she was 19. She was the only woman in her law school Class, graduating summa cum laude. Her star academic performance got her free tuition for a doctorate degree in law. Everything was for her two daughters, who survive her, Dr. Robin Freedberg and Sydney Freedberg. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Alexandra Ozols, her husband Alexander Heffner, and four nieces, Marjorie Tyroler, Ruth Tyroler, Laura Arredondo and Perry Tyroler.
