María del Carmen Pizarro, born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on July 30th, 1937, passed away in New Haven, CT, on March 10th, 2024, at the age of 86. Although she was trained as an architect in Buenos Aires, she made a career for herself in translation. She left Argentina for New York City to work for the United Nations, and there she met her husband, raised her family and lived the rest of her life. María is survived by her husband, Walter Pizarro; her son, Miguel Pizarro, and his wife, Jocelyn Garrity; her daughter, Dolores Minakakis and her husband, Efstratios Minakakis; and her grandchildren, Isabel and William Pizarro and Catalina Minakakis. María loved literature, art, and music; her knowledge in all of these areas was truly encyclopedic. One of her greatest passions was classic film of the 1930s and 40s, a love that she has passed down to her children and grandchildren. Fiercely independent, María lived and died on her own terms. She left this earth surrounded by her family and she will be greatly missed.
A memorial will be held on Friday, March 22nd at 2 PM at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in María’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
