

Marjorie J. Oberlander, 81, of New York City passed away on April 18, 2023. Marjorie was born on July 15, 1941, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Bert and Helen Kun, of blessed memory. She was predeceased by her dear sister, Susan Leddy. Marjorie is survived by her children Lynn (Gary Drevitch), Jill (Larry Penn), and Bert (Kristen Oberlander), and her grandchildren Benjamin, Alexander, Jack, Natalie, Samantha, Danielle, Adam, and Harry. She is also survived by her loving partner, Maurice Charney.
Marjorie was known for her open, vivacious manner and made friends wherever she went. She was a 1962 graduate of Syracuse University and held master’s degrees from Columbia and Manhattanville College. A teacher by vocation, Margie was a lifelong aficionado of the arts. She was an early supporter of playwright David Mamet, producing the New York premiere of his play Edmond at the Provincetown Playhouse in 1982. She was a theater critic and a longtime board member of the Joyce Dutka Foundation for the Arts, which identified and supported promising young artists.
Marjorie was an avid tennis player, runner and biker, and loved to travel. She was also a devoted fan of Shakespeare, ballet, and opera. A lifelong learner, she attended classes at Columbia in a myriad of subjects and taught herself chess so she that could play with her grandchildren. She was a kind and generous person, with a flair for the dramatic. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
A funeral service will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel on April 21, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The New Jewish Home, where she spent the last months of her life.
