
The Reverend Martin Dale Wayne Cosand was born May 4, 1922 in Madison County, Iowa. He is the son of Vava Delaplain Cosand and Floyd Cosand. He spent a large portion of his youth with his maternal grandparents Loyel in Peru, Iowa and with his stepfather George Shade. He graduated from Winterset High School and then graduated from Iowa State Teachers College, which later become the University of Northern Iowa.
Martin found his true home in New York City, arriving as a young man and claiming he would leave when he grew tired of it, but he never did. He received his Ph.D. in psychology from Columbia University. He entered the priesthood serving parishes in Iowa, Illinois, Florida and New York. He was also a long-term Director of Guidance at Rhodes School, also spending time at Kew Forest. While in the employment of these institutions he had the opportunity to travel the world with his students.
Martin lived his life on his own terms and filled every day with people, music and love. During his long life he made many close friends and had a life rich with love and experiences.
Martin had a sister Mariam Dowler, a brother Clair Martin (who died at birth), and sister Evelyn. He and his sister Evelyn had a close relationship with many happy visits shared between them. He survived by his nieces and nephews.
Martin has never been alone. His closest friends have become part of his family: Pavel Simacec, Hillel Lofaso, Stephanie Rosenblatt, Michelle Perrault, Gene & Frances Mintz, Evelyn Cherry, Elvira Bumbgardener, and many-many others. For the last five years, he lived in his Manhattan apartment with his adopted grandson Timur Pozhidaev, who shared his final years and have been with him till the last minute.
Visitation will be held at the Riverside Memorial Chapels, located at 180 W. 76th St, (on Amsterdam Avenue) New York City on Thursday September 10, 2015 between the hours of 10:00 and 11:00 AM. A funeral service will commence at 11:00 AM.
