

Michael began teaching at Dalton in 1973 and retired in 2019, dedicating 46 years to mentoring and influencing generations of students throughout his career in subjects ranging from Geometry to Calculus. He also taught an independent study in the German language, served as Dalton's first girls' soccer coach, and chaperoned Model UN trips for years.
In 1999 he received the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Teacher Recognition Award.
In a 2019 yearbook tribute, students wrote: "You made every class fun and exciting while imbuing what we learned with a remarkable sense of wonder and import. You cared about developing each student's understanding." Faculty and staff fondly recall Michael's clever and humorous poems.
He was born in Germany where he still has an extended family. He lived in Canada for many years where he studied at McGill University before coming to New York. He was well known for his sense of humor, his writing of poetry and his love of reading.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Graciela Espana.
A gathering and visitation will be held at Frank E. Campbell - The Funeral Chapel, located at 1076 Madison Ave, New York, New York, 10028, on September 9, 2025, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
A funeral mass will follow at St. Ignatius Loyola Church, located at 980 Park Ave, New York, New York, on September 9, 2025, starting at 1:30 pm.
