Nathan Treske Bahny was born April 29, 1953, in Eureka, CA to Anne Lucille (nee) Treske and Herman Leon Bahny, both opera singers. They came to the east coast soon after his birth. Although he got a degree in Political Science from Brockport State University, the Bahny gene pool had a greater sway, and he sought singing opportunities in New York City. A survivor of “the opera wars” he performed in over 100 operatic roles.
It was in this milieu that he came to meet the woman he would marry, Elizabeth Hastings. After cohabitating for 25 years, he felt it safe to make things official. They were married in 2007 by Nico Castel. Tony Amato gave the bride away. He was very proud of having been a member of the Metropolitan Opera Extra Chorus for a number of years, sharing the stage with many great singers.
As many singers do, he had a day job. It was the perfect situation as the folks at Quinn Library at Fordham University were generous in giving him time off to audition and perform. The congenial staff made for an amazingly stress-free job. In his words, “the worst thing that happens is somebody doesn’t get a book.” He was blessed with wonderful friends and colleagues.
