

Norman Neil Lanes D.O., a cardiologist and internist, died October 4, 2024 in Woodmere, NY. Born in Brooklyn on March 7, 1948, he graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey with a bachelor of science degree in biology and received his medical degree from Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Lanes returned to New York City for his internship, residency and chief residency at Beth Israel Medical Center. He was a fellow in the Division of Cardiology at Cornell University Medical College and at Beth Israel Medical Center, both in New York, New York. He was also a clinical instructor in medicine and cardiology at The Mt. Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York and a clinical professor of medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, New York.
For 22 years, Dr. Lanes had a private practice in cardiology and internal medicine at 885 Park Avenue in New York City. For 30 years, he also covered 40 beds as a primary care physician at Keser Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Brooklyn, New York. But the work he enjoyed most was as a police surgeon for the New York City Police Department, where for almost 25 years he evaluated duty status, did sick and trauma call, and assessed medical clearance for Hazmat ventilator use and performed World Trade Center evaluations. He loved working with police officers, and respected the value and difficulty of their jobs.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Lanes was a passionate animal lover and supported multiple charitable organizations focused on wildlife preservation, animal rights and ending the use of animals in medical research. Earlier in his life, he was an avid hiker and backpacker, and traveled extensively to such places as Patagonia, Nepal and Africa. He studied kung fu for 30 years at Grandmaster Alan Lee’s Chinese Kung Fu, Wu Su Association in New York City, attaining the rank of fourth degree.
Dr. Lanes is survived by his loving wife, Susan Wyland, and his dear sister, Denise Lanes. For those who wish to make memorial contributions, the family suggests Defenders of Wildlife or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
A celebration of life will be held at Frank E. Campbell – The Funeral Chapel (1076 Madison Avenue) on Saturday October 19 at 11 a.m.
