My condolences, for sure. But I cannot believe that no one in the family had the consideration to inform me, a close friend and colleague of Rabbi Hiat for nearly fifty years! Poland, the Vatican, The Soviet Union - through hell and high water we were together,
My heart is breaking…

Rabbi Hiat was much beloved by my entire family. He was my Bar Mitzvah teacher, and for my three brothers, as well. He was our source of Judaic knowledge, and our protector. He tenderly officiated at the funerals of both of our parents.
Rabbi Hiat was only 25 years old when he taught me my Bar Mitzvah readings on Cannon St on the Lower East Side. I vividly recall his kindness when he created a protective tent for me with his tallis to shield me from the many bags of hard candy thrown at me after I finished reciting my Haftorah.
I will always remember his special thoughtfulness.
May his memory be a blessing!

Torah and Talmud. He has had a major influence on our thinking.  Rabbi Hiat's commitments to Jewish learning and learning at large,  the Jewish people, and humanity were passionate. We were honored to experience his kindness and intellectual incisiveness.  We are at a profound loss and feel great sorrow. He will forever be in our hearts.
