Ray was raised in Bergen County, New Jersey. After graduating from Teaneck High School, he received a B.A. in Economics from the University of Rochester and Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1960.
Except for a brief stint with a large Newark law firm after graduation, Ray maintained his law practice, Jacobs & Bell, in Tenafly, New Jersey. In 1980, Ray and his brother Mitch launched Software City — a retail software company that was ahead of its time, and at one point had 100 stores across North America.
Throughout his life, Ray worked with various civic organizations and bar association committees, having served as President of the local Lions Club, B'nai Brith, Trustee of Temple Beth El, Trustee of the Harrington Park Senior Citizens Housing Corporation and Chairman of the New Jersey Supreme Court Ethics Committee for Bergen County.
Ray was a lifelong soccer fan, launching the New Jersey Eagles soccer team in 1987. Ray was a true renaissance man, diving into many hobbies and entrepreneurial adventures throughout his lifetime. He ran a magazine, Timesharing Today, created various apps, and was an avid painter. If you asked Ray, he never retired from law. In fact, he maintained his practice until he was 89-years-old.
He was a deep-thinker, a loving husband, and a caring father and grandfather. Ray is survived by his wife, Marti, his sons Gregory and Douglas; his daughters-in-law Heather and Cheryl; his grandchildren Gabriel, Declan, Sabrina, Benjamin, and Samantha; and his beloved grand-dog, Cody.
A Memorial Service will be held on October 5, 2026, at 3:00 pm at Riverside Memorial Chapel.
