I had the great pleasure of working with Dick at The American Boychoir School.  After his retirement from Phelps-Dodge, Dick devoted himself to the boards of ABS, Avon Old Farms School, and Mystic Seaport.  He was a model trustee and an indefatigable fund raiser - a great champion of institutions he believed in.  I will always remember his passion for choral music and for education.  A wise, kind friend.

Dick welcomed our son onboard Excelsior for a cruise in Maine, as one of some 400 Scandinavian youngsters. We got to know him better following years when NAS cruised in Finland and Sweden.
Visiting New York and Darien he drove us around and made a special guidance at Mystic Seaport, which he had a special interest in.

His Godson married our daughter, they met as Doug was one of Dick´s crew for the Finland tour. Dick was a an important person in their life, living abroad in Sweden.

Every early December a handwritten letter arrived from Dick, telling about his work for youngsters, about music-events and about his plans for the future.
Just expecting his letter,  we heard that there will be no more letters.

But there is a hope to sail together again in all our future.  Talk again or just enjoy that special feeling about Dick. He was such an easy person to be silent with for a while.

Sailing Penobscot Bay on Excelsior; dinners at the Griswold Inn, parties in Manhattan, Donovan concerts, the ballet and more..... RIP, kind man.

Dick was one of the most wonderful people I have ever had the joy of knowing.  He helped me in so many ways.  When I was hoping to know what being a rancher meant he helped me find a job on ranch, when I wanted to figure out if I could be a rock star he offered me  a place to stay, council, & food, and he inspired me to never stop short of what I felt I could do.  He was a conduit leading me to become a confident person in a complex world through his humor, authenticity, & charity.  I will miss Dick everyday, but am glad he spent his last day's with his beautiful cat, seeing the St. John's, & having control of his life.  Excelsior!!
