Sabrina Ho, one of the youngest heart transplant patients in history, passed away at the age of 21 on August 26, 2018, after a hard-fought battle with post-transplant-related lymphoma. Sabrina was feisty, funny, creative and an inspiration to everyone who knew her. A student at American University, where she was a beloved member of Sigma Delta Tau, Sabrina loved fashion, drawing, her dogs, Hamilton, and her native New York City. Sabrina was a tireless campaigner for other pediatric heart patients, but was perhaps never so happy as when she was making fun of her devoted mother!
Due to idiopathic cardiomyopathy, Sabrina received a heart transplant at 5 months old, which launched her into a life of immunosuppressants, doctors, but also school, independence, and joy. But at 13, Sabrina’s heart began to fail again and, though low on the transplant list, she received a second heart and a kidney during a fog-in that kept flights grounded. A year later, she was leading a tour for visiting Tennessee college students and they could not keep up with her as she marched them over the Brooklyn bridge. Her adventures took her all over the world in a life rich with friends and loving family. Sabrina will be much missed by everyone whose life she touched; she had a rare combination of determination and humor that made her not only a great patient, but a great friend, daughter and granddaughter.
She is survived by her mother, Mary Chan and her father, Paul Ho. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pediatric Cardiology Gift Fund at Mount Sinai:
