Sandra Lerner Gerstmann passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, at the age of 89. The widow of her late husband Kurt Gerstmann, Sandra leaves behind a deeply cherished family and a lasting legacy in contemporary art.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Sandra’s passion for creativity emerged early and guided her throughout her life. After studying at Hofstra University, she made New York City her home and became an integral part of its vibrant art community. Her free spirit and love of travel inspired her work—ranging from minimalist abstractions to emotionally rich figurative pieces—which was celebrated for its bold use of color, texture, and form. Her art was exhibited widely in New York, previously at The Betty Parsons Gallery and as of late at June Kelly Gallery, and was represented throughout the US and Japan in numerous public and private collections. Sandra’s paintings reflected both her inner world and her keen observations of the human experience, blending modern physics and eastern mysticism.
Sandra was a devoted mother to her sons Jeff (Debbie) and Cliff. She was a proud grandmother ("Manna") to Jordan, Scott (Nicole), Alexis, Ricki, and David, and a delighted great-grandmother to Elia. Her family was her greatest joy, and her warmth and generosity touched all who knew her. She loved to spend time with her family at her home in Sherman, Connecticut. The sunsets overlooking Candlewood Lake inspired many of her paintings.
Sandra’s passing marks the loss of a remarkable artist and a beloved matriarch, but her spirit and creativity will live on in her work and in the hearts of all who loved her. Her influence will endure through the many lives she touched and the powerful body of work she leaves behind.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
