Sarah Backer

Passed peacefully in her 94th year, on December 21, 2021, after a brief illness. Sarah was the daughter of the late Max and Ethel Eidinger of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Sarah grew up in Quebec City and met her future beloved husband, Joseph Backer while attending a wedding in New York City in 1947. Sarah moved to New York City in 1949 following her wedding. Sarah is survived by her son, I. David Backer and partner Sandra O’Day of Guildford, Connecticut, her son Rabbi Richard Backer and son-in-law Will Verbits of Newton, Massachusetts, her grandchildren Emma (and partner Brendan), Taylor (and partner Adam) and Austin Backer-Verbits of Newton Massachusetts. Sarah is also survived by her nephew Daniel Kliger, niece Beverly DeLauri, nephews Robert Eidinger, Gordon Eidinger and Harvey Eidinger of Montreal, Canada, and John Eidinger of Oakland, California (and their spouses, children and grandchildren). Sarah was predeceased by her identical twin sister Jennie Kliger, sisters Rita and Esther Eidinger, brothers Ben Eidinger (and sister-in-law Sally), Samuel Eidinger (and sister-in-law Rose) and Benzion Eidinger, and nephew Mitchell Eidinger. Sarah’s grandchildren were ‘the apples of her eye’, loving them dearly, worrying about them always and praying for their health and happiness. They will miss her greatly. We extend our deep gratitude to the nursing staffs of St. Raphael’s Hospital, The HomeAides and Connecticut Hospice who treated her, and to neighbors Jimmy and Claire Murrihy and personal aide Lucy Vanderpuije, who provided her with the most loving support. A private funeral will be held on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at the Beth El Cemetery in Paramus, NJ. Arrangements were made by Riverside Memorial Chapel. Donations in Sarah’s honor may be made to a charity of your choice.
