

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Spencer Erwin Sherman, M.D.. A prominent NY ophthalmologist and surgeon, Spencer peacefully passed away on July 27, 2024 at the age of 88. Born April 8, 1936 in NJ to Phillip and Sydell Sherman, Spencer graduated Cum Laude from Princeton University in 1958 and from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 1962. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1963 to 1965. Spencer practiced medicine in NY for over 53 years and was as dedicated to his patients as they were to him. Spencer was a clinical professor and attending surgeon in the department of Ophthalmology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and attending surgeon at both the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and Lenox Hill Hospital. In 1970 he was named Chief of the Eye Department of the Hospital for Joint Diseases of NY and a consulting ophthalmologist for the United Nations. Spencer was a founder of the Museum of Vision in San Francisco, CA, of which the holdings include the Spencer E. Sherman, MD Antique Ophthalmology Book Collection. Spencer was an avid collector of antique ophthalmological instruments and memorabilia and donated his collection to Alcon Laboratories in Fort Worth, TX. Spencer will be remembered as a true gentleman with impeccable style. He was a source of wisdom, encouragement, and boundless love. He was a passionate tennis player, golfer, amateur artist, and enthusiastic singer. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 62 years, Sue; devoted daughters Sabrina McEvoy (Rob) and Cristine Robinson (Kelly); adoring grandchildren Elizabeth, Katie, Caroline, Charlotte, and Clay; and sister Pam Pantzer. He is predeceased by his twin brother Ronald Sherman, M.D.. Spencer will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday July 30 at 11:00am at Frank E. Campbell, 1076 Madison Ave, NY. A private graveside burial to follow. The family will be receiving guests at Campbells on Monday July 29 from 4:30-6:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Spencer’s memory to Princeton University Annual Giving.
