March 19, 1944 – October 24, 2026
Sylvia Taubman, 82, of Manhattan’s Upper West Side, passed away on October 24, 2026. Caring, fun, fiercely independent, and deeply devoted to her family and friends, Sylvia was someone who would do anything for the people she loved.
Born in Basel, Switzerland, on March 19, 1944, to Sarah and Jack Taubman, Sylvia grew up in the Bronx. Some of her happiest childhood memories came from summers at Jewish camps in New York, Connecticut, and beyond, where her parents worked as cooks. Those summers gave her lifelong friendships and stories she delighted in sharing throughout her life.
One camp memory captures Sylvia especially well. When a fellow camper who hoped to become a nurse wanted to spend time learning from the camp nurse, Sylvia took on her friend’s chores so she could do just that. Even then, Sylvia’s thoughtfulness went beyond kind words—she found a way to help.
The joy of those summers also lived on in the camp songs she remembered: “Jack and Suze, Jack and Suze, what a lovely couple. Cooked the food, boy it’s good, can we have a double.” For Sylvia, the songs and stories kept those cherished days, and the people who shared them, close.
Sylvia made her home on the Upper West Side throughout her adult life, living with the independence and self-sufficiency that those who knew her admired. She worked at Barneys before managing several nightclubs and restaurants, including Café Feenjon, Noga, Cafe Wha?, and The Comedy Cellar. Her outgoing personality, sense of fun, and ability to connect with people suited a life filled with memorable encounters, lasting friendships, and wonderful stories.
Her loyalty was unwavering. For years, she drove back and forth between New York and New Jersey to help a dearly loved friend and her children with whatever they needed. If Sylvia was your friend, she showed up for you.
Family meant everything to her. She gathered and preserved hundreds of photographs and documents spanning generations, carefully arranging them in albums and files. Through that collection, she leaves her family a precious record of the people and history she held dear.
Sylvia is survived by her beloved brother, Harry Taubman; her sister-in-law, Cynthia Taubman; her nephews, Jeff and Greg Taubman; her niece, Laura Taubman; and Tal Eyal and Jonathon Eyal, whom she loved as a daughter and son. She also leaves extended family and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her generosity, humor, and fierce devotion. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sarah and Jack Taubman.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 26, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Beth-El Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus, New Jersey 07652, with Cantor Ellen Tilem officiating.
Sylvia will be remembered in the stories shared, the photographs treasured, and the lives of the people she so thoughtfully cared for.
