Theresa Merenda
August 26, 1926 - June 16, 2024
Theresa Merenda, almost 98 years old, always had a habit of claiming to be a couple years younger. She was the beloved mother of Diana, grandmother to twins David and Stephanie, and great-great-grandmother to Lucas and Caleb. She was also the cherished mother-in-law to Herbert. David's marriage brought her another wonderful Stephanie into her life.
Her family valued a European education, so Theresa went to boarding school in Rome, Italy, to pursue fine arts. During World War II, she found herself trapped in Rome with only her grandfather for support. Communication with her family in the U.S. was possible only through the Vatican. Despite these challenges, Theresa thrived, becoming fluent in Italian, French, Latin, and English. She later pursued animation in New York City, graduating from Columbia University, and went on to contribute to iconic cartoons like Popeye, Betty Boop, and Casper the Friendly Ghost.
The oldest of three children, Theresa outlived her younger brothers, Joe and Dan. Petite but assertive, she was always fashionable—even gardening in heels. She adored her family, especially her daughter, and was known for her generosity and love for others.
She loved most people and prayed for them.
She was generous and told her family “whatever you need just call me “.
She made sure everyone was eating, but never ate that much herself.
She had a glass of red wine 🍷 every night and maybe that’s what kept the doctors away.
She was afraid of birds 🦅 and hated the rain. ☔️
Her driving was dangerous, but she never had an accident.
Overall, she stood up for what she wanted while still being loved by all.
When asked by her grandchildren about the secret to her long life, she playfully responded that breakfast in bed was the real secret.
Theresa passed away peacefully in her sleep, at home, just as she wished—never wanting to be in a hospital or poked by doctors. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
We especially want to thank Theresa’s care givers for being with her and providing her with extra love and care for over 8 years. Thank you Mel, Nicole, Salomey, Audrey. Theresa was always grateful for you.
