Kahn--Thomas Graham, of New York City, passed away on August 17, 2026 at age 83. Beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, Tom was a lifelong learner, avid traveler, and cheerful spirit who lifted all around him. You always knew he was present by the sound of his signature radiant laugh. The son of Irving and Ruth Perl Kahn, Tom or Tommy as many called him, grew up in Belle Harbor, Queens. In his younger years, he could be found playing tennis in his backyard with his father, brothers, and neighborhood friends. Intellectual curiosity was a staple throughout his life. He had a passion for history and architecture and would read two or three historical non-fiction books at the same time — all of which contributed to his gift for storytelling. After college, he could frequently be found proudly sporting his Cornell blazer, and, following an internship in London, he went on to receive his MBA from what became the Stern School of Business at NYU. With his father and brother (now succeeded by his son Andrew), he founded the legendary value investment firm Kahn Brothers & Co, now Kahn Brothers Group, in the traditions of Benjamin Graham, who was a teacher and mentor to his late father and Thomas Graham’s namesake. Tom later contributed to Graham's fourth edition of his renowned book The Intelligent Investor. Tom served on several boards, including publicly-traded companies and philanthropies. In 1971, Tom met Michele Davidow while dancing at her sister’s wedding, and they married soon after, raising their three children, Andrew, Elizabeth, and Victoria with love. After 35 years of marriage, Michele passed away in 2007. In 2010, Tom married Marilyn Kramer Weitzman, a real estate professional who founded The Weitzman Group. They traveled the world together for the past sixteen years. Tom had a tremendously generous heart. He regularly made his table bigger, adding friends and extended family to his circle of loved ones. He always wanted family to be together, and treasured his time spent on Sebago Lake at Migis Lodge. He was an active philanthropist, with a dedication to the Ackerman Institute for the Family, the Lighthouse Guild, the Jewish Braille Institute, the Men’s Club at Temple Emanu-El, and the American Federation for Aging Research. Like his late father, Tom worked until the day he died, driven by his quest for knowledge and passion for his work.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn; children, Andrew (Gisella Lemos), Elizabeth (Ryan Kahn) and Victoria; stepdaughter, Randee Weitzman (Alex Belaid); grandchildren Stella and Luca Kahn, and Meadow and Max Kahn; step-grandchildren Juliette and Zackary Belaid; brother, Alan; and many beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews, extended family, and dear friends. He is predeceased by his first wife, Michele, his brother, Donald, his father, Irving, and his mother, Ruth. Services will be held at Temple Emanu-El, 1 E 65th St, New York, NY, 10065 on Thursday, August 20 at 10:00 am. Contributions in his honor can be made to the Ackerman Institute for the Family, the Lighthouse Guild, AFAR and JBI. Links to donations below.
