Walter Robert Johnson Jr., affectionately known as “Bobby,” was born September 17, 1945, and raised in the Amsterdam Houses in New York City. On July 4, 2025, while visiting his son and beloved childhood home, Bobby transitioned from this life.
Bobby was the cherished and first-born son of the late Walter Robert Johnson Sr. (Clutes) and Julia Johnson (Ms. Jewel). He also was preceded in death by his sister Diane Victor-Johnson.
After graduation from Charles Evans Hughes High School, he was drafted into the U.S. military. Bobby honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. His bravery and sacrifice earned him distinguished honors including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Air Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and other commendations. After returning from service, he pursued higher education in business and finance. He later built a career with Butterick/Vogue Company, where he worked diligently for over 25 years. In 2007, he relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina, to care and be with his younger sisters, Diane and Julie, as well as his nieces Francine and Iyanna and nephew Pierre. He made NC his new home and worked at NC State University until his retirement, embracing the country living.
Bobby was a quiet, humble, and intelligent man with a deep love for the arts, cooking, music, reading and sports. He especially enjoyed WNBA basketball and tennis.
Bobby enjoyed the simple pleasures of life — watching tennis matches, relaxing outdoors observing nature, listening to his favorite tunes and enjoying Francine’s cooking. His calm demeanor, kindness, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memory his son Christopher Johnson, granddaughter Kaylee Johnson, his sisters, brothers, along with nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and some very special friends.
Bobby was truly a handsome, loving, and peaceful soul. His presence will be missed but his legacy of humility, service, and love will forever remain in our hearts.
