

Bettie Jean (Matthews) Ligons
Bettie was born January 8, 1938, to Wesley and Alice Matthews in Rolling Fork, MS. She was number four of thirteen children. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age at Mt. Lula Missionary Baptist Church, Rolling Fork, MS. Bettie was devoted and served faithfully in the church choir; Always a gentle spirit and spoke softly with a big heart to love people. Bettie later moved to Compton, California to live with her uncle, Rev. James Pope and aunt Rose Pope. Bettie attended Manual Arts High School, and continued to devote herself to an afterschool job at a local nursing home. That inspired her to continue a career in nursing until her retirement.
Bettie was united in Holy Matrimony to John Ligons in 1958, and unto this union conceived two sons, John and Mark.
On Wednesday, April 6, 2016 Bettie finished her course, she fought the good fight of Faith, and the Lord said, “Well done thy good and faithful servant, come on home”.
She is survived by her sons: John Ligons and wife Patricia Ligons, Mark Ligons and wife Mercedes De La Cruz- Ligons. Stepdaughters: Elisia Ligons Farmer and Janell Ligons. Grandchildren: Merrell Ligons, Aaron Ligons, Darnell Ligons, Carl Ligons, Shawnda Banks, Marisa Ligons, Patrick Ligons, Alexa Ligons and Stephanie Gutierrez; One brother, Timothy Mathews; Six sisters: Margaret Hollins, Bobbie Selvey, Elaine Matthews, Bonnie Montgomery, Nessie Matthews and Pat Lewis: Siblings that have preceded her in death: Wesley, Thomas, Delores and Lynn; A host of great grandchildren and friends.
For half a century Bettie was a member of Greater Temple of God Missionary Baptist Church, Los Angeles, CA with the Honorable Pastor Willie T. Snead. After moving to Lancaster, CA with her son Mark, she became a member of Living Stone Cathedral of Worship, the Honorable Bishop W. Hearns presiding.
Bettie Jean Ligons has touched so many lives with her gentle spirit. She has left her mark on all that have had the pleasure to meet her. “To live is Christ, and to die is gain”. “Her words were always to encourage and give wisdom that would empower you to strive for greatness”.
