Don was a dear friend for over 40 years. We shared many good times playing basketball, softball, and golf. We raised our kids together and shared in each others joy and sorrow. While I have so many fond memories of Don, there is one particular act of kindness that has affected my life, and will affect the lives of my posterity throughout eternity.
Don was my Home Teacher during a time in about 1976 when I was not attending church regularly. On one of his visits, "out of the blue," he felt prompted to ask, "Randy, what is the matter with you?" Confused, I asked what he was talking about. He said, "you haven't been to church regularly for a while", "what's wrong with you, are you crazy, or stupid, or what?". "Get off your dead butt and do what you know is right". It was the perfect thing to say at just the right time. I had been feeling the need to change for some time, but didn't have the courage or, maybe motivation to do it. Don provided the perfect combination of chastisement and support that I needed to make the required changes in my life.
Don and I spent thousands of joyous hours together over the last 44 years, but none was more important to me, or my family than that one evening when the Spirit prompted him to speak and he had the courage to follow through. I know that God will bless him for his love and service to me.
With love always,
