Douglas joined the U.S Marine Corps January 11, 1955 and was honorably discharged on August 18, 1962. While in the service, his rank was CPL. He received the medal of good conduct in 1957 provided by the Marines. He then joined the U.S. Army and was a private from 1962-1967. In his later years, he was a mail carrier for the U.S Postal Service at the Saugus Depot from 1967 to retirement in 1992. Douglas is pre-deceased by his wife of 51 years, Maureen A Hurst. Douglas is survived by his 3 children:
daughters; Cindy Louise Noble, Beverly Jean Cates, and son; Richard Douglas Cates. Grandchildren; Bradly Noble, Douglas Noble, and Stephanie Schoellerman. Great-Grandchildren; Cortney Schoellerman, Charles Schoellerman, Cassandra Schoellerman, Christopher Schoellerman, Theron Noble, and Tenley Noble.
