Dear, sweet Genoa was my aunt (my daddy’s sister), but not just family to me. She was a dear, dear friend. We laughed a lot! When I moved to California, & I had to change jobs, she & uncle Pete took me in. I learned so much from her... invaluable things like healthy cooking, cleaning & how to make a house a home. She became a mother to me as my mom was taken by cancer when I was 13. I don’t know where I would be today without her. She saved my life. I miss her so much. I’ll always cherish our memories & her generous and fun-loving spirit. Rest In Peace with God dearest Genoa.

I could probably fill a book with all the wonderful memories I could share about my sister Genoa, I loved so much. The old house that we grew up in on Dempster street in South Memphis was probably 100 years old and not in great shape. The house was a duplex that my Daddy converted into one house and the side with three bedrooms had no heat. There was my mother and father and five out of nine children (including my brother by another mother Mark) living at home. When Genoa was 17, she brought Pete home and boldly announced (you would have had to known my father) that she was getting married and leaving with Pete. I was 8 years and I started crying and bawling. Pete started asking me why I was crying so much that this was just my sister getting married and she was moving on to a better life. I told him that I was afraid I was going to freeze to death with winter approaching. He said how could that happen. I told him Genoa sleeps with me and keeps the bed warm. Everyone including Pete had a big laugh. Well, the truth is Genoa was like an electric blanket. Just her presence in the bed kept it warm. Pete was right, Genoa has gone on to a much better life than this. She has gone to an eternal life with Jesus Christ because before she died, she told me where she was going.
