Our beloved Hanibal Babasi, age 78, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Hanibal was born on March 16, 1944, in the village of Adda, in Urmia, Iran to his mother Cecilia Lachan and his father Hawel Babasi. He was the middle child of the family and the only son, so he was very loved by his parents and his two sisters.
In July 1975, Hanibal married the love of his life Varlyet Toman. Hanibal and Varlyet raised four wonderful children together. In 2001, Hanibal made the decision to move his family and immigrate to the United States, settling in Southern California. For Hanibal, this new country was full of opportunities, but also challenges. But the struggles were well worth it because he felt that his four children would live in a country without fear and oppression.
Hanibal Babasi was a faithful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a hard-working, kind, and generous man, who loved others and was loved by everyone who knew him. Hanibal Babasi was truly one-of-a-kind, and he will be very much missed.
Hanibal Babasi is survived by his wife of over 47 years Varlyet Toman, his daughter Benyta Babasi Maradkel, his son Beny Babasi, his daughters Bernadet and Bilet Babasi, and his grandson Maroeil Maradkel. Hanibal also leaves behind two sisters, Juliet Atoory in Australia and Ane Babaei (Dadosh) here in Southern California, one son-in-law, Sargon Maradkel, who is married to Hanibal’s eldest daughter Benyta, and one daughter-in-law, Anet Lazar, who is married to Hanibal’s son Beny.
Our hope is in the resurrection from the dead, and in Him, Jesus, who said, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he dies, yet he shall live” (John 11:25). May the Lord bless you all.
