Harold (Pat) Sturgeon passed away peacefully on November 21, 2021 at his home in Mission Hills, CA at the age of 93.
Born in 1928 in Wellsville, MO., Harold is the second of five sons of Risdon (Bid) and Letha Sturgeon. Pat and his brothers worked the family farms as they attended schools in the Wellsville and Montgomery area. Pat’s Dad was a contractor and Pat helped in the construction of homes for families in the area.
Pat joined the Navy at the end of World War II in 1945 and served as a seaman and medic while stationed on Bikini Island where testing of the Atomic bomb took place. Pat was honorably discharged in 1947, leaving the ship in Long Beach, CA. Once in California, he was here to stay.
Pat soon found interest in Rachael whom he married in 1947. Pat joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1951 where he remained for 25 years, retiring in 1976. He could be found in Hollywood, Foothill, and Van Nuys Divisions over the years.
While a Motor Officer, Detective, Vice Squad, Sergeant and finishing at Parker Center, he raised a family with his wife Rachael. In 1964, Pat guided the family in the construction of a home in Mission Hills on a hill overlooking the San Fernando mountain ranges. He lived in the home he built for 57 years.
Pat embarked on a new career with Rachael in 1976 as they acquired the Granada Hills Hardware store. Together, as co-owners, Rachael and Harold built a long list of clients throughout the North and West San Fernando Valley serving the community for 28 years. Pat was co-recipient of several recognitions over the years for their contributions to local charities. After the 1994 earthquake, Pat could be found at the sidewalk in front of the store helping families obtain emergency supplies and parts while both the store and their home had suffered serious damage.
Pat loved the outdoors and he loved people, helping anyone and everyone wherever he found the need. Pat always wanted to know all about his friends and customers, their families, their careers and their hopes and dreams.
