James Bruce Cox Feb 20, 1916- June 14, 2015

Military Graveside Services will be held for James Bruce Cox at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, TX at a date and time to be determined.

Jimmy passed away Sunday June 14, 2015 at his home in Newhall, CA at the age of 99 years and 4 months.  

Jimmy was born February 20, 1916 in Benton Arkansas to John and Lula Cox.  At the age of 10 Jimmy's mother passed away after a very long battle with cancer. The family moved to San Antonio in 1930 and from then on Jimmy considered himself a Texan. He loved San Antonio and in his heart that was always his home.  As a young man he managed the F.W. Wool Worth Company Department Store on Houston Street in Downtown San Antonio.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on February 2, 1942 at Perrin Air Force Base in Sherman TX.  He completed training at Lowry Field, Colorado and Harlingen Army Air Field.  He was in the Skies over Normandy on Day, June 6, 1944.  As a Staff Sargent he was part of the 1st Bombardment division that spearheaded the entire Eighth Air Force into Central Germany on January 11, 1944.  He was the tail gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress Bam Bam.  His Units actions on this day earned them the Distinguished Unit Citation (later renamed the Presidential Unit Citation). Jimmy was also an instructor at the Air Corps Tactical School at Maxwell Field in Montgomery AL. He also instructed gunners for the B-17 Flying Fortress at Hobbs Army Air Field New Mexico.  Here he worked along side Jimmy Stewart and developed a good friendship with him that continued for many years.  During his time overseas he spent a lot of time with Clark Gable, who, besides being enlisted, was a promoter and photographer for the Air Corps assigned to Bomber squads with the Eighth Air Force.  Jimmy was with Major Gable when many of his photos were taken.  Among his accommodations are the Presidential Unit Citation, The Flying Service Cross and The Air Medal.

Upon his Discharge from the Air Corps in 1945 Jimmy moved to Baton Rouge LA where he went to work for Roy Logan Shoes. His job was to train the managers for new stores. This took him to Denver, Eagle Pass, San Antonio, and Brownsville. He also managed Cannon Shoes all over the Rio Grande Valley and the DFW area.  In 1968 he accepted a job with Lockheed in Palmdale, CA and enjoyed 20 years there until his retirement in 1988. During this time he meet the love of his life, Marjorie.  They spent over 40 years together until her death on March 27, 2015.

Jimmy will be remembered for his uncanny memory and sharp mind as well as his colorful sense of humor. 

Left to Cherish his memory are his Step-Son whom he considered his own, Terry Verbois Jr. of Burleson TX, daughters; Dolores Schriever of Poteet,TX, Patricia Wynn of Dallas, Linda Gregson of Argyle,TX, and Mary-Susan Merritt of Teague TX.  Grandchildren; Rick Jr., Robert Sr., Linda, Laura, Casey, Clay, Chris, and Aaron. 14 Great Grandchildren, one Great Great Granddaughter.  Caretakers Dori, Josey, and Janette.  Fur baby Spice.

Proceeding Jimmy in death are his wife Marjorie. Parents; Lula, John and Mama Sue.  Brothers; Chase, John, and Bishop. Sister Mildred. Grandson George. Fur babies Sugar and Brue.
