After a long illness, Joan passed away on August 4, 2024, in Thousand Oaks, California. She will be laid to rest today next to her late husband Roland Jarve. Thank you all for coming to remember and celebrate Joan’s life.
Joan was born Aug 23, 1939, to Charles and Elizbeth Harris in Burbank California, where lived with her mom, dad and brother Bob, she was also for fortunate to live next door to her Aunt Rose & Uncle George and cousins Carolyn and Georgie. Next door to them was her maternal grandmother Phobe Iskian. As a young girl, Joan was proud to be a part of Job’s Daughters California and often spoke fondly of this time in her life.
Joan graduated in 1958 from Burbank High and later went on to graduate with honors from California State University Northridge with a degree in Political Science.
Joanie, as most people fondly called her, was blessed to have 4 loving husbands, Allen Crown, Eugene Hinkston, Roland Jarve and Thomas Colette.
She leaves behind her children David Crown, Lori Crown, Rody Jarve and Lisa Hoover. She was blessed with 8 grandchildren who she loved and adored, and she recently welcomed 6 great grandchildren into her life, she was beyond thrilled.
One thing all her children will agree on is Joanie was an amazing cook and loved to entertain. She loved the holidays, knew how to make them special, and oh Joanie could throw a good party!
She also loved to do crafts, paint and was an excellent seamstress, making many articles of clothing and costumes for herself and children. Joanie loved sharing the arts with her children and grandchildren including theatre, museums and dance performances.
Joanie had a passion for traveling around the world, she enjoyed visiting Africa, England, or cruising to Alaska to name a few. She held a special place in her heart for Maui in her later years.
To know Joanie, you know she loved animals, especially dogs! There wasn’t a dog she didn’t like. She wasn’t afraid to pick up strays and supported local dog rescues and other wildlife foundations. She was beyond generous. She loved riding and having horses.
When Joanie wasn’t busy being a loving mom and grandma, you could find her antiquing at the best spots in town or around the country for that matter. She had an eye for finding treasures and bringing them home.
Her love of antiques led her to become a Quester in 1980 and she was one of the founding members of the Heritage Reflections Chapter in Santa Clarita, CA. She became a chapter president in 1984-1986 and then went on to become a California state president in 1996-1998. Joanie left her mark as a leader, a knowledgeable collector, and someone who could organize an event and be a gracious party hostess. She was proud of her contributions to moving the Saugus Train station in 1980 to its current location at the Santa Clarita Historical Society. She also enjoyed being a docent at the fully restored Quester houses, donating countless hours to her community.
Joanie was always there to listen, help and offer solid advice to her children, grandchildren, and friends. She was the first to help a friend in need.
Joanie held a special place in many people’s lives and hearts, she will be missed. We thank you for coming today and being part of her life and celebration.
Please join us for a special luncheon in honor of Joanie following the graveside service at The Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills, CA at 12:30 pm
