Ofelia was born October 19, 1920 in Veguita, Cuba, to Felipe Acosta Fonseca and Digna Guerra Pérez. She lost her mother at an early age, and was raised alongside her sister Virginia Emma (deceased), and her brother Delio (deceased) by her father and her beloved aunts, whom she remembered lovingly throughout her life. She married Abel Martinez Hernandez (deceased) at a civil ceremony on December 31, 1956. Ofelia’s most cherished memories were of growing up in Cuba, travelling and staying in Havana for her schooling at the University of Havana, and traveling in summer study groups to the University of Alabama and the University of Tallahassee, as well as travelling and staying in New York City. Ofelia and Abel, along with their children, Sarah and William, traveled to the US in April 1970. After their move from Cuba to the US, Ofelia became the bridge that kept the family together by sending and receiving letters from the family in Cuba. She enjoyed writing and spending time with family and friends. She is remembered with love and admiration by all. She was a loving mother to Sarah and William, a loving wife to Abel, and a beloved grandmother to Thalia Maite, Laurent Paul, Favian and Viviana. She also leaves two great grandchildren, Nico Abel and Grayson Phoenix, who will not get to enjoy her loving nature, but will learn of her life through their parents and grandparents.
We will miss her beautiful face, her jokes, her stories, and overall her loving embrace.
