Rene Gutierrez, 65, beloved father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully in his home on May 9th, 2013 surrounded by family, which he lived for and loved, after a three year battle with prostate cancer.
Rene was born on June 19, 1947 in Guatemala City, Guatemala, to Arturo and Carlota Gutierrez. He joined the Boy Scouts of America at the age of 9 and earned various merits of honor in recognition and achievement. He grew up to serve as a Scout Master and rose to the highest rank attainable, an Eagle Scout. Shortly after, he trained and worked as a Fire Fighter and later worked as a lifeguard on the beaches of Guatemala. After saving lives he shifted careers and followed his passion to work in Radio. He freelanced his way through various radio stations gaining valuable experience and in a few short years was recruited to work for the number one radio station in Guatemala where he introduced top chart hits, interviewed musicians, reported the daily news, covered stories and did voice-over radio commercials.
Then he decided to chase his dream of living in the USA to give his family a better life and raise them in the “land of opportunity”, migrating to the United States in 1974.
He resided in Los Angles, CA for 40 years. He worked for American Signs Co., traveling and discovering the scenic routes of Southern California. He later retired from Heinz Co. as a manufacturer after 20 years of service.
Rene enjoyed camping, being outdoors, trips to the beach and dancing. He was passionate about spending lots of quality time with family and friends. He had a keen sense of humor and comforted us with laughter. He enjoyed eating at Las Fuentes, picking up Porto’s and he especially enjoyed family BBQ’s.
One of his greatest passions was sharing his knowledge of music, without missing a beat he would introduce the artist and track in his signature voice.
He was an outstanding role model and a caring and loving father. He lived his life guided through his faith and upheld the principles of Latter –Day- Saints. He served in the Temple and served various callings including LDS Church President.
Rene is preceded by his father Arturo Gutierrez, his mother Carlota Divas Gutierrez and Granddaughter Victoria Nunez.
Rene is survived by two daughters, Monica Nunez and Jennifer Garibay, three sons Douglas, Glauco and Christopher Gutierrez, Twelve Grandchildren, One Great-Grandchild, Six Sisters and Two Brothers.
