Roy Pierre Wooden, 90, of Sunland, California, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026. Born on May 25, 1935, in Burbank, California, Roy lived a life of unwavering faith, dedication to family, and service to others.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 20 years, Ediluce (Lucy); his daughters Lois and Miriam; his 11 grandchildren; and his 8 great-grandchildren. Roy was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Joan; their son Mark; and their daughter Andrea.
Roy graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1953 and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in theology having attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Biola University. Roy was called to begin his professional life as a Missionary. From 1962 to 1968, Roy and his first wife, Joan, along with their children Lois, Miriam, and Mark, served as missionaries in Brazil. Their work was a testament to their devotion to spreading The Gospel and serving God’s people. After their return to Los Angeles, Roy continued to do mission work every summer. He led sports teams to play various sports throughout the Americas and Europe with the purpose of evangelizing. Roy and Joan had welcomed fourth child, Andrea not too long after returning from Brazil. Roy began his career as an Adult Education teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District. Over the course of 30 years, he touched countless lives through his dedication to education and his commitment to helping others. Following his first wife Joan’s death, Roy continued his Brazilian outreach working with Churches in Brazil, leading him to be able to meet his beautiful, current wife, Lucy.
Faith was at the center of Roy’s life. A devoted Son and follower of God and saved by The Lord Jesus Christ. He was a long-time member of Grace Community Church. Roy and Joan were deeply involved in Grace Church’s ministry to the handicapped community, inspired by their son Mark’s life with Cerebral Palsy. Together, they provided love and care to this community for many years. Roy and Lucy have been faithful members of PIBBLA and HOPE, Brazilian Churches in Los Angeles, where Roy historically had occasionally given sermons, continuing the work he began as a missionary in Brazil. He retained his fluency in Portuguese as well as Spanish and French throughout his life!
Roy had a passion for connecting with people across the globe through Ham Radio and started at 14 years old. This hobby brought him joy throughout his life as he engaged in conversations with individuals from all over the globe, even into his final years. Annual family beach camping trips were another joy for Roy. During his children’s younger years, Roy, Joan, and their children regularly camped at San Diego beaches. As a grandfather and great-grandfather, he continued this tradition with trips to Leo Carrillo Beach, creating cherished memories for generations.
An avid sports enthusiast, Roy followed Los Angeles teams passionately. Though he began as a Lakers fan, he controversially switched allegiance to the Clippers in recent decades. He also loved watching football, baseball and volleyball. His love for sports extended beyond spectating; he traveled across the Americas and Europe evangelizing through sports ministry. Roy particularly enjoyed international competitions like the Summer Olympic Games and World Cup tournaments. He proudly attended the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the Women’s World Cup in 1999.
Roy’s life was defined by his faith, love for family, and dedication to serving others. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him. May his legacy of kindness, devotion, and faith continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
