Alan was my oldest and dearest friend. We were friends at Christopher Newport College (not University) and were later off-campus roommates at the University of Georgia. Even back then, Alan had a poetic and philosophical turn of mind and a disdain for uncouth speech and behavior. He was a brilliant and warm conversationalist (and writer), a skill that gave me many hours of delight  and support, even during the worst of times. Above all, he was the most loyal of friends over the years and most devoted of family men. Need that I add he was the very epitome of a gentleman? I bid him a temporary farewell, with tears and with thanks. My prayers are with Irene and his daughters and their families, but I  feel that they all will find comfort, not only in memories of his life, but in his continuing presence among them.

My parents were next door neighbors to Mr. Watson. Mr Watson would always take out the trash for my parents after my father became ill and was unable to take it to the road. He was a blessing to my family and I really appreciate his generosity. Praying for the family that God would grant each of you peace during this time.

I was so honored to find my name on the list of folks that Alan wanted to see at the 50th Hampton High School Reunion this past May. We spent a lot of time together in the car going to Navy Reserve meetings back in the day. We also attended Christopher Newport College together.
I'm stunned by Alan's passing; but I'm so glad that we were able to reconnect at the Reunion after so many years. We had such a good time talking and going over our memories of the good times. I'm fortunate to have had this friend and I will miss him.

I met Alan, who was my brother's UGA roommate/best friend ,long ago and he gave me a glowing reference for Navy officer training and gave my late Mom's eulogy in 1997. He was a good soul, and I will never forget him.
