

Born June 24, 1930 in Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late Logan Jacob Whitener and Bertha Arndt Whitener.
Betty was a member of Catawba United Methodist Church, where she was active and former past president of the United Methodist Women. She was a lifetime member of the Catawba Chapter 124, Order of the Eastern Star. Betty retired from Pinnacle Furniture in Claremont. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Betty’s joys in life included cooking for her family, gardening and watching college basketball.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, William L. Travis; her brothers; Rray Whitener, George Whitener, Glenn Whitener, Charles Whitener; and her sister, Virginia Corpening.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Jane Lutz and husband, Brent of Monroe; sister, Patty Whitener Stallings of Maiden; grandchildren, Katie Lutz of Durham, and Adam Lutz of Monroe.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, April 20, 2014, at Catawba United Methodist Church, with Rev. Stephen Shytle and Rev. H. Cowles Bristol, III officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., on Sunday, April 19, 2014 at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.
