Christa (Chris) Lunge Heymann, age 94, died Sunday, February 17, from the result of heart failure at Catawba Valley Medical Center, Hickory, North Carolina. She was born November 28, 1924, in Wismar, Mecklenburg, Germany. Chris was preceded in death by her husband, Hans Gerhard Heymann; her parents, Erich and Ella Lunge, Itzehoe, Germany; a sister and brother-in-law, Marlies Evans, Oslo, Norway, and John Evans, Perth, Scotland; and one brother and sister-in-law, Guenter Lunge, Mondsee, Austria, and Gisela Lunge, Hasloh, Germany.
Chris immigrated with her husband and children to Hickory, North Carolina, in 1953. She and the family became naturalized citizens of the United States in 1958. When her husband left Lenoir-Rhyne College in 1969 in order to teach in the English Graduate Program at Appalachian State University, they enjoyed mountain life in Boone. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Later in life they returned to the Hickory area, and eventually moved to Abernethy Laurels in Newton, NC.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Hans Paulsen and Jane Heymann of Statesville; and Harald and Karen Heymann of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Amy and Cliff Singleton of Statesville; Gavin and Anne Heymann of Durham; and Wesley and Leslie Heymann of Durham; and great-grandchildren, Ella Singleton, Statesville; Helen and Clara Grace Heymann, Durham, and Tucker Heymann, Durham. Also surviving are nieces and nephews in Germany, England, and Scotland.
The family appreciates the compassionate care and service of the Catawba Valley Medical Center nursing staff while she was a patient there, as well as the staff from Abernethy Laurels, Newton, during the years she resided there in independent living.
The family will hold private graveside services at the Abernethy Laurels Memorial Garden where her cremains will be inurned next to her husband’s. In lieu of flowers, the family indicates that donations can be made to the Abernethy Laurels Memorial Garden Fund, Abernethy Laurels, 102 Leonard Avenue, Newton, NC 28658, or to a charitable organization of the donor’s choice.
