Cleo Pope Abernethy

Cleo Pope Abernethy, age 92, of Clemmons, NC, formerly of Catawba, NC, joined our Lord in Heaven on Thursday, January 24, 2019, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Born October 28, 1926, in Catawba County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Charles Henry Pope and Mary Susan Sigmon Pope.

Cleo was grounded by her faith in God and in her work ethic, having grown up in a farming family. Until her health declined, she was active in her church, Center United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 37 years and sang in the choir for 59 years. She will be remembered for her servant heart.

In addition to her parents, Cleo was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Abernethy; brothers, Harrel, Roy, Tate, Fred, Charles, Jr.; and sisters, Helen, Lucille, Doris, and Mary.

Survivors include her son, Rick Abernethy and wife, Anne, of Winston-Salem, NC; brother, Bryce Pope and wife, Alice of Maiden, NC; grandchildren, Katherine Abernethy of Charlotte, NC, Meredith Abernethy of Winston-Salem, NC, and Will Abernethy of Winston-Salem, NC.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, January 28, 2019, at Center United Methodist Church with Rev. John Love officiating. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:45 to 2:45 PM on Monday.
