Evelyn Smyre Herman

Evelyn Smyre Herman, age 92, of Newton, NC, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Catawba Valley Assisted Living at Rock Barn in Conover, NC. Born March 30, 1923, in Catawba County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Walter Lafayette Smyre and Beulah Edna Bowman Smyre.

Evelyn was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover, NC, and was a charter member of the former Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Newton, NC, where she had been active as a Sunday school teacher and member of the LWML. Along with her husband, Emmett O. Herman, Evelyn was the former co-owner of Twin City Insurance Agency in Newton, NC. She was a charter member of the Unifour Association of Insurance Women and was a member of the Newton Prayer Coffee. Evelyn enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emmett Osville Herman; son Emmett Osville Herman, Jr.; sister, Rebecca S. Campbell; and brother, Clyde Smyre.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Diana Herman of Charlotte, NC, and Lesa H. Williams and husband, Dale “Opie” of Hickory, NC; grandchildren, Crystall Chapman and husband Jason, Bryan Williams and wife Vanessa, and Sarah Elizabeth Herman; great-grandchildren, Nathan Chapman, Caitlyn Chapman, Jordan Lineberger, and Austin Williams.

A celebration of Evelyn’s life and service of remembrance will be held at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover, NC. The Rev. Mark Schudde and Vicar Jim Kent will officiate and the burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, NC. The family will receive friends in Emmaus Room at the church prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:15 on Wednesday.
