

Frederick Ross Jones Sr., 92, of Newton, died Sunday, May 28, 2023. Born in Greenville, SC, he was the son of the late Paul and Blythe League Jones. He was a graduate of Parker High School and Clemson University where he earned an Electrical Engineering degree, and served our country in the United States Air Force.
While in high school Frederick played football for the Golden Tornados. After the game, his future wife, Shirley Masters, would wait on him near the door to the dressing room. She went on to sponsor him at their Homecoming Game. He worked for Duke Power achieving the position of Senior Industrial Engineer. He was a volunteer of the year for Duke Power, United Way of Catawba County in 2010, and received the Governor’s Award for North Carolina in 2011. Frederick was a former President of the Rotary Club in both Shelby and Newton as well as President of the Duke Energy Retirees (Hickory Chapter). He was an Ordained Deacon at First Baptist Church of Fountain Inn, SC, and was Committee Chairman of the Building of Trinity Baptist Church in Newton serving as Deacon Chairman and Chairman of the Prayer Garden.
Frederick and his wife Shirley traveled extensively. They drove to the Grand Canyon, taking the northern route in and the southern route out. They enjoyed cruises and traveled to Hawaii, The United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, China, New Zealand, Australia and Alaska.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Shirley, and his daughter Linda Diane Jones Temple. He is survived by his sons: Frederick “Rick” Ross Jones Jr. and his wife Sharon of Moravian Falls, NC and Russell Jones and his wife Christy of Charlotte; Daughter: Robin Jones of Charlotte; brother: Richard Jones of Belton, SC; and three grandchildren: Trevor Horne and his wife Cynthia of Charlotte, Lacie Jones and her fiancé Max Schmidt of Asheville, and Mason Jones of Charlotte.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Trinity Baptist Church, 725 W 13th St. Newton, NC 28658, with Rev. Brant Hoots officiating with an inurnment held at the church columbarium. The family will receive friends following the service.
