McDonald "Mac" Wellborn

McDonald “Mac” Wellborn, age 95, of Newton, passed away Wednesday, May 09, 2018 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton.
Born April 29, 1923 in Wilkes County, he was the son of the late Mont Mack Wellborn and Annie Mae Payne Wellborn.
Mac served in the US Army from January 1943 until February 1946. He served at Camp Croft in South Carolina, Camp Siebert in Alabama, and Fort Lewis in the state of Washington. He also served for 18 months on Saipan in the Western Pacific. He was awarded the following medals; American Theater Service, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service, Good Conduct, and World War II Victory.
Mac was a member of First United Methodist Church in Newton where he served in numerous positions through the years. He was founder and co-owner of Modern Cleaners of Newton, Inc. from 1947 until retiring in 1985. He was a member of the NC Association of Launderers and Cleaners and served one term as vice president of the western district. He was a charter member of the Newton-Conover Civitan Club with over 25 years perfect attendance and serving two terms as President. He was a member of Catawba Lodge 248, a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Horne Wellborn; brother, Fred T. Wellborn, Sr.; and sisters, Ola Schulenberger of Salisbury NC and Ruby Wagner of Florida.
He is survived by a daughter, Donna Grimm and husband, Tom of Minerva, OH; granddaughters, Andrea Leigh Grimm Mullins and husband Derek of Marion, OH, and Shelly Leanne Grimm Poindexter and husband Merce of Knoxville, TN.
The funeral service will be held at 11am on Monday May 14 at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Lara “Willis” Greene officiating. The family will receive friends at the church, prior to the service, from 10 to 10:45am. Burial will follow at Eastview City Cemetery in Newton.
