Bernie Josef Schiffner, 76, of Newton, NJ, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023, at the Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice, surrounded by the embrace of his loving family. Bernie was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, whose kindness and warmth left an enduring mark on the hearts of all fortunate enough to have known him.
Born in Braach, Germany, Bernie was the cherished son of Ursula and Theodore Schiffner. He spent his childhood in Paramus, NJ where he met the love of his life, Darlene. In 1966, they embarked on a lifelong journey together when they exchanged their vows. Their love story was one of unwavering devotion and partnership. They made their home in Newton, NJ, where they lovingly raised their three wonderful children.
After graduating from Paramus High School, Bernie attended the RCA Institute of Manhattan. While his career initially began at Hewlett-Packard, he was drawn to the outdoors. His love for travel and exploration led him to establish his own business, Schiffner Limousine, which allowed him to embark on unforgettable Winnebago adventures.
Bernie discovered joy in life’s simple pleasures. He enjoyed spending time measuring the weather and studying the night sky. If he were not sitting in the living room with a cup of coffee and a newspaper, you could find him strumming his guitar, sitting around the poker table, or watching the NY Yankees and Giants games. He could also be found at Sparta Lanes where he was a member of many leagues. He proudly scored a perfect 300 game.
Bernie’s most important value was family. He adored his grandchildren, giving each of them special nicknames and creating cherished memories like hiding treasures in the garden for them to discover. Bernie was a constant presence at their games, dance recitals, concerts, and graduations. Bernie’s warmth, compassion, and boundless love extended not only to his immediate family but also to the broader community of friends he held dear.
Bernie is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Darlene, his children, Deana (Dave), Susan (Andy), and Jeff; his cherished grandchildren, Ryan, Danielle, Peyton, Alexa, Taylor, Drew, Morgan, and Jordan; his sister, Vera; his beloved cat, Hershey; and grand-dog, Cosmo.
A visitation to celebrate Bernie's life will be held from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, located at 63 High St, Newton, NJ 07860. Funeral Services will begin at 7:30 pm on Thursday, as we gather to remember and honor the beautiful life of Bernie Josef Schiffner.
