

Carol was born and raised in Albany, New York. She attended Hartwick College, earning a Bachelor of Biology degree in addition to studies in Chemistry and Liberal Arts. Carol worked as an Associate Scientist for Hoffman LaRoche in Nutley for 27 years, retiring in 1998. In her career with Hoffman LaRoche, she worked with teams in the development of PCR testing for specific diseases as well as a diagnostic test to detect HIV and some carcinomas among many others. Carol’s studies were presented and published in many conferences and papers; she was very proud of her work.
Carol was a member of the Garden State Weimaraner Club and the Weimaraner Club of America. She bred Rottweilers for 35 years raising many show dogs and champions. Dogs were Carol’s true passion. In recent years, she was the resident of choice with the service hour volunteers from Grover Cleveland Middle School when they visited Harmony Village.
Carol was predeceased by her father, William Godfrey Smith; her mother, Mary Ruby (Swift) Smith Mayer; her step-father, Richard Mayer; her son, Devon Lewinski; and her brother, Bill Smith. She is survived by her son, Darren M. Lewinski and his girlfriend, Tami; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Bonnie Smith; and her close friends, Debbie and Terri.
Graveside services will be held privately in Good Shepherd R.C. Cemetery in Green Township.
