Born in Englewood and raised in Leonia, Charles was a resident of Walpack from 1973 to 1983, then lived in Wantage from 1983 until moving to Newton in 2016. He worked for the Newton Board of Education as a Science Teacher at Newton High School, retiring in 1998 after 34 years of service. He also served as the Director of the Thunder Mountain School from 1972 to 1983. A member of Christ Episcopal Church in Newton, Charles was also a member of the Flying Hawks of Milford, Pennsylvania.
The son of the late Charles J. and Edna (Bussey) Gerth, Charles was also predeceased by his sister, Jeune Lauer, in 2016. He is survived by his wife, Elaine (Simms) Gerth; his two sons, Charlie J. Gerth of Sandyston Township and David A. Gerth of Frenchtown; his daughter, Lisa Yanecko of Wantage; his eight grandchildren; and his one great-grandchild.
Services are private and are under the direction of the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton.
