Born in the Bronx, Gerry soon moved to Newton, New Jersey where he became a lifelong resident. Gerry was a graduate of Pope John XXIII class of 1975 and went on to dedicate over 25 years as a union electrician.
Gerry could best be described as just a “Great Man”. He was the epitome of hard work and exemplified what a partner, father, and friend should be. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.
Gerry enjoyed nothing more than spending quality time with his family and friends, and getting to see his children and grandchildren grow up. He was consistently willing to sacrifice and prioritize his family’s needs above his own, and he always did so with a warm smile on his face. The pride Gerry felt for his family was everything to him, and this was evident to all who knew him. He set a great example for his family and friends on how to succeed as a worker, a father, a husband, and a man. He would always selflessly put others before himself, and for that he will always be loved and remembered.
Gerry’s sons recently asked him what he wanted most out of his life, and his response was simple, immediate, and perfectly exemplified who he was:
“I want to leave this world knowing that I did whatever I needed, no matter the sacrifice, to make sure my children, and my grandchildren are able to be more successful than I was in every aspect of life. That’s all that should matter to any father.”
Gerry leaves fond memories to his beloved wife of 45 years, Charlene Ryan, and his children Sean (Vanessa) Ryan, Shannon (Rachael) Ryan, Patrick (Donna) Ryan, and Brendan (Katie) Ryan. He also leaves behind 9 grandchildren, 4 brothers, and 6 sisters.
A visitation for Gerry will be held on Friday, May 17 from 1pm to 3pm and from 5pm to 7pm at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St, Newton, NJ 07860. A Funeral Mass will take place the following day Saturday, May 18 at 10am at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 24 Halsted St, Newton, NJ 07860.
