Howard B. Kern
January 14, 1935 – April 5, 2021
Howard B. Kern, 86, life-long New Jersey resident, passed away on Monday, April 5, 2021, at his home.
Howard, born in Newark to the late William and Doris Kern, was raised in Maplewood. He received his bachelors from Cornell University and Medical Degree from the Seton Hall College of Medicine and Dentistry. He was a urologist in private practice in Wayne for nearly 50 years.
Howard had great gusto for life. He loved travel, restaurants, whether Jewish deli or Michelin-starred, books of history, and a good bottle, or two, of fine red wine. With his beloved wife of more than 40 years, Nadine Kern, he shared a singular passion for dogs. Darwin, a golden retriever, held an especially dear place in his heart.
A devoted father, he made weekly Sunday calls and annual visits to each of his three adult children who lived through the US: Matthew, his oldest child and only son, a neurosurgeon, and wife Kathy, who raised their daughters, Lauren and Sarah, in Indiana; Jill, an academic administrator at Brown University; and Nicole, a senior executive at the University of California at Santa Barbara, her husband, Jay Klanfer, and their daughters, Jordan and Maya.
Services are private and are under the direction of the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton, NJ.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center, 575 Woodland Ave, Madison, NJ 07940. Online condolences may be offered at www.smithmccrackenfuneralhome.com.
