Born in Newark, New Jersey, Joan was the beloved daughter of John and Mary (Rozyski) Schuler and the younger of their two children.
From an early age, Joan developed a passion for dance that became a lifelong calling. She pursued her dance training in New York City and went on to dedicate more than three decades to teaching and inspiring young dancers. As the owner and director of her dance studio in Hopatcong, Joan shared her love of dance with generations of students, helping them build confidence, discipline, and lasting friendships. These relationships built through her years as an instructor left a lasting impression on students and families throughout the community. Her studio became a second home for many, and her influence extended far beyond the dance floor.
Joan was known for her grace, creativity, strength, and unwavering dedication to her family and students. Whether choreographing a recital, encouraging a nervous performer, or celebrating the accomplishments of those she taught, Joan approached every aspect of her life with passion and purpose.
In addition to her contributions as a dance educator, Joan was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who treasured time spent with her family. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren and found immense joy in watching them grow.
Joan was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, John E. Kressman; her parents, John and Mary Schuler; and her brother, John Schuler.
She is survived by her son, John Kressman and his wife and Joan’s caregiver in her later years, Marissa; her daughters, Heidi Schnoor and her husband, Bernard, and Susan Benson; and her beloved grandchildren, Jonathan Kressman, James Kressman, and Anthony Benson. She also leaves behind many former students, friends, and extended family members who will remember her with love and gratitude.
Joan’s legacy lives on through the family she cherished, the students she inspired, and the countless lives she touched through her lifelong dedication to the art of dance. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
