Louis was born on June 19, 1943, in Newark, NJ to the late Louis and Stella (Wesowlowski) Slamer. Louis grew up in Irvington and lived in Stanhope before settling in Newton in 1989.
Lou spent much of his life with a guitar in hand, not for fame or recognition, but for the simple joy of sharing the craft with others. While he was a skilled musician in his own right, those who knew him would say his true gift was teaching. He had a rare ability to meet students where they were, guiding them forward with encouragement, humor, and steady discipline.
For many years, Louis taught guitar lessons through Lou’s Music Center, becoming a familiar and trusted figure to generations of students and families. His loyalty to the shop was as enduring as his love for music, and his presence there became part of its character. It wasn’t uncommon for former students to return years later, not just to play, but to thank him for the confidence and love of music he helped instill.
In his later years, Louis also served as a crossing guard for seven years, a role he carried out with dedication and care for his community.
Louis is survived by his beloved wife, Maureen Patricia Slamer, and his caring son, Michael Slamer and his wife, Cipriana.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Christ Church, 62 Main St, Newton, NJ 07860.
