Nancy Jane Gehring

Nancy Jane Gehring (Nee Durkin), born September 17, 1934 died at home in Newton on July 26, 2022, with her two loving daughters by her side. Predeceased by her parents, Edith Durkin (nee Rosendahl) and Thomas E. Durkin, sister, Patricia E. May, and brother, James T. Durkin. Survived by her two loving daughters, Patricia Gehring DeHuff and her husband, John A. DeHuff, Jr.; Kimberle J. Anderson and her husband, James P. Anderson; two beautiful grandchildren, Elizabeth L. DeHuff and her husband, Seth Trenchard, and John A. DeHuff, III, a brother, David E. Durkin, and several nieces and nephews.

Nancy graduated from Teaneck High School in 1952. She then attended the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising in Manhattan and subsequently worked as a fashion coordinator in Quackenbush’s Department Store in Paterson, NJ where she designed and created elaborate window displays, coordinated fashion shows and events. She also worked at Sterns Department Store. Nancy later worked as an aide at the Merriam Avenue School and then at Waterloo Village where she demonstrated quilting. Nancy was very creative and talented in many artistic crafts, including sewing and quilting which she passed on to others by teaching her craft.

Nancy’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother to her two daughters whom she raised with much love. Nancy especially enjoyed the time she spent with her two beautiful grandchildren.

A resident of Newton since 1964, Nancy loved her home which she took great pride in for 58 years. A woman with a strong Christian faith, Nancy was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Hackettstown, where she attended church with her family. Before becoming a member of Trinity, Nancy attended First Baptist Church in Newton for many years.

Memorial visitation will be held Saturday July 30, 2022 from 10 to 11AM at the Smith-McCracken Funeral home 63 High St Newton, NJ 07860 with a memorial service to follow at 11 AM at the funeral home.
