Born in Newton to the late Martin C. and Joan (Benz) Havens, Paul was a lifelong Sussex County resident. He was employed as a water repairer for the Town of Newton for a number of years prior to his retirement in 2014. Paul was a good husband, father and friend. He was very proud of his home and the projects he and his family completed together (some with professional help).
During the summer Paul enjoyed fishing, especially with his son, Trevor, and relaxing and visiting with friends at the family cabin on Fairview Lake in Stillwater. The cabin was originally built by his grandfather, Louis, and Paul and his brother, Alan, spent most of their summers on the lake.
Paul was a life member of Newton Fire Department and a member of the Deckertown-Union Cemetery Association and the sons of the American Revolution. He was also a member of the Gravely Tractor Club of America and the Vice President of the North Jersey Antique Engine & Machine Club. Paul enjoyed collecting and refurbishing old tractors, especially Gravely tractors. One of his greatest joys was “Plow Day” and volunteering his time at the Sussex County Fair with his friends from the NJAE&MC.
Paul also enjoyed being a Boy Scout Leader with Fredon Troop 92, then Hampton Troop 96, and finally Stillwater Troop 83. He enjoyed camping with the scouts and helping them achieve their goals. As a great father, Paul played a big part in his son’s achievement of Eagle Scout. He was also an excellent coach and offered guidance in sports and other things as Trevor was growing up. Paul introduced Trevor to many things, Star Wars being one of them.
In addition to his parents, Paul was also predeceased by his grandparents, John and Elida (Snook) Havens and Louis and Anna (Pierson) Benz. His is survived by his wife of 31 years, Deborah (Jackson); his son, Trevor and significant other, Ashley Hebble; his brother, Alan C. Havens and wife, Luz Marina; along with his cousins, extended family members and many friends.
A Graveside service will be held at 12 pm on Thursday, January 21, 2021, followed by a Firemen’s Service, at Frankford Plains Cemetery, Plains Rd, Augusta, NJ 07822.
