Thomas was born on June 25, 1934 in Stillwater to the late Robert and Hilda (Westbrook) Schoonover. He grew up in Blairstown before settling in Hampton Township in 1965. Thomas proudly served his country, joining the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, Thomas returned home and pursued his passions. Whether he was casting a line in his favorite fishing spot, tracking game through the wilderness, or tending to his beloved garden, he found peace and fulfillment in the simple pleasures of life. Prior to his retirement, he was the Supervisor of the Motor Pool for the County of Sussex. Thomas was also a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in Newton, he was deeply committed to supporting his fellow servicemen and women.
Thomas is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Pauline Schoonover and his canine companion. Along with his parents, Thomas was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and William Schoonover.
A visitation will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St, Newton, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Roman Catholic Church, 203 Swartswood Rd, Newton, NJ. Interment to follow at Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Cemetery in Newton.
