Steven, known lovingly as “The Rooster,” was born in Newton and was a lifelong Sussex County resident. The VanStone family has a long lineage in Stillwater Township; in addition to farming, Steven’s late grandfather, Charles VanStone served as Township Clerk as did his late mother, Ellen VanStone, until her retirement. Steven was a Newton High School legend for his skilled pitching in baseball. He was professionally drafted with the Chicago White Sox; unfortunately, Steven suffered a serious injury that changed his life and from there Stillwater Lawn Service was born.
Steven was the owner and operator of Stillwater Lawn Service for many years prior to retiring at 65 years old. Hard working does not even come close to describe his work ethic; he would work 7 days a week regardless of weather or other circumstances; he was a force to be reckoned with. Steven was a kind man with a wonderful sense of humor and an incredible smile. He was also an avid fishermen and animal lover.
Steven was predeceased by his mother, Ellen (Juras) VanStone. He is survived by his son, Tyler VanStone; his former wife, Blaine VanStone Mendres; and his longtime friend, Michael Chammings.
Arrangements are private under the direction of Smith-McCracken Funeral Home. Online condolences may be offered below.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Steven’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or an animal shelter of you choice.
